New to crochet?
Crochet is such fun, and such a portable craft, no wonder it’s so popular at the moment! Why not join a class and have a go yourself?
These friendly classes will teach you how to crochet. Each class has a maximum of 4 people. With some aimed at complete beginners, and some for those who may know just the basics, each class tackles a specific project designed to teach you basic crochet stitches and how to combine them, plus how to read a pattern and a chart, and how to complete a project.
The yarn for the granny squares and coaster projects are provided and there’ll be crochet hooks to use at the class. For the basket class there will be a range of yarns to purchase at the class.
The Crochet at the Cinema classes usually take place at the Arthouse Cinema in 159a Tottenham Lane, N8 9BT. The cafe will be open so you will be able to grab a coffee, soft drink (or even a beer or wine) if you wish.
You will need to book in advance – just email me at info @ pickingupstitches (dot) com or fill in the form here stating which class you’d like to attend.
The granny squares, coasters and basket projects for January are suitable for complete beginners, the MORE granny squares, and JOINING granny squares suitable for those who can already complete a granny square. For the JOINING class, you will need to bring at least 6 completed squares with you plus the yarn that you wish to join your project together with.
For the granny square you will learn how to make a slip knot, how to chain stitch, and how to work into a ring. You will also learn how to make treble crochet stitches.
The traditional granny square is so versatile. Once you know how to crochet one, you’ll be well on your way to making a blanket, a cushion cover, a table mat, a coaster, a wristband – the crochet world’s your oyster. You can read about some of the things I’ve made out of granny squares recently over on my Blog page.
MORE granny squares
If you can already crochet the basic granny square, this hour-long class will teach you some variations. I’ll also have lots of examples for you to look at and will take you through how to complete any you particularly like the look of.
JOINING granny squares
If you have crocheted some basic granny squares, this hour-long class will teach you some fancy ways to join them together (as well as some of the basic methods too!). For this class you will need to bring along at least 6 completed squares and the yarn with which you want to join them together.
Little baskets are simple to work, even for beginners. You’ll learn how to work in the round, and use double crochet and half treble stitches. There’ll be a choice of yarns from which to purchase, as yarn choice can produce lovely variations in size and shape.
You can see some of the baskets I’ve made on my blog here.
These are suitable for beginners and once you’ve mastered the technique you’ll be able to make table mats too. Yarn will be provided for one in the lesson, however if you want to make a set and buy your own yarn to bring along, I can advise you on yarn selection before the class.
