Fallen Leaves Autumn Cowl

FALLEN LEAVES AUTUMN COWL

Fallen Leaves crocheted cowl

This pattern for my Autumn Cowl uses a number of different stitches to achieve the effect of berries and autumn leaves – you can read about my inspiration for it on my blog page… If you make one for yourself, I’d love to see a picture of it!

Materials:

DK yarn (I used Stylecraft Special DK in Copper, Tomato and Mustard)

Yellow = approx 25g

Orange = approx 25g

Brown = approx 20g

3.5mm crochet hook

Measurement:

Width 32cm (circumference 65cm) and depth 17cm

Tension:

17sts and 10 waves to 10cm (waves measured from bottom of first to top of 10th wave)

Abbreviations:

ch = chain

dc = double crochet

htr = half treble

tr = treble

ss = slip stitch

4tr cluster = work tr omitting last stage (2 loops on hook), work three more tr in same st, omitting last stage on each tr (5 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all 5 loops.

Method:

With Yellow yarn, ch111.

Starting at second ch from hook, work dc in each ch to end.

Join carefully into a circle with a ss into first st, ensuring the circle does not twist.

From here on, work in rounds.

Next Round: 2ch (counts as first htr), work 1 htr in each stitch, ss to top of first 2ch. 110sts

Bobble Round: Work 3ch (counts as tr), 2tr changing colour to yellow on last step of this stitch, (with yellow work 4tr cluster in next st changing colour back to brown on last step of cluster, in brown work 4tr changing colour on last step of last tr), then repeat instruction in brackets to end, finishing last rep with 1tr instead of 4tr, ss to top of first 3 ch.

Next Round: Work 2ch (counts as first htr), htr in each st to end, ss to top of first 2ch.

Next Round: Work 1ch (does not count as a st), starting at base of ch, work dc in each st around, changing to orange join with ss to back loop of of first st.

First Pattern Round: 2ch (counts as first htr), working in back loop only, work tr, 3dtr, then (tr, htr, 3dc, htr, tr, 3dtr) repeat instruction in brackets to last 5sts, then tr, htr, 3dc, join to back loop of top of 2ch using brown.

Second Pattern Round: 3ch (counts as first tr), working into back loop only htr, 3dc, then (htr, tr, 3dtr, tr, htr, 3dc), repeat instruction in brackets to last 5sts, then htr, tr, 3dtr, join to back loop of top of 3ch using brown.

Repeat last two rounds four times, then First Pattern Round once more.

Next Round: 1dc (does not count as st), working into back loop only, work dc in each st, join to top of first st with ss.

Next Round: 2ch (counts as first htr), work 1 htr in each stitch, ss to top of first 2ch.

Next Round: Repeat bobble round.

Next Round: Work 2ch (counts as first htr), htr in each st to end, ss to top of first 2ch.

Next Round: Work 1ch (does not count as a st), starting at base of ch, work dc in each st around, join with ss to top of first st. Fasten off and darn in ends.

If you want to make a slightly larger cowl, which measures 37cm in width (circumference 75cm) and depth 21cm, use a 4mm hook and ch121 to start with. You will end up with 120 sts and need to work 13 waves. The tension should be 16sts and 9 waves to 10cm.
