ch = chain
dc = double crochet
tr = treble
ss = slip stitch
sp = space
Notes
This is written in UK terminology. Instead of the standing treble and dc, you can join in the yarn and work 3 ch to count for first tr or 2 ch to count for first dc. You can either work in ends each time you change colour, or you can leave them all to the end.
To work granny square
In colour 1, chain 5 and join into a ring by ss into first chain.
Work 8tr into ring, join with ss to top of first tr. 
Next round: Using colour 2 make standing tr in any st to start, 1tr in same st, 1ch, then (2tr, 1ch) in each st to end, join to top of first treble with ss.
Next round: Using colour 3, make standing tr in any space to start, tr in same space, 2ch, then (3tr, 2ch) in each ch space, 1tr in first ch space and join to top of first treble with ss. At this point your work is still circular.
Next round: Using colour 1 make standing dc to start in ch sp, 1dc in same sp, 1ch, then (3tr, 2ch, 3tr in space to make corner, 1ch, 3dc,1ch in next ch space) 3 times, then 3tr, 2ch, 3tr in next ch space, 1ch 1dc in first ch sp, join to top of first dc with ss.
Next round: Using colour 4 make standing tr in a corner, 1tr, then 2ch, 3tr in same sp (4tr in each of next 2-ch sp, 3tr, 2ch, 3tr in corner sp) 3 times, then 1tr in first corner sp and join to top of first treble with ss.
Next round: Using colour 2, work 1dc in each side st, and 2dc, 2ch, 2dc in each corner, then join to top of first dc with ss.
To work a little flower
Chain 4 and join into a ring.
Work 8dc into ring and ss to join to first st.
With new colour start with 1ch (doesn’t count as stitch), then work 2dc,1 ch into each st, ss to first stitch to end round.
With new colour ss into first 1-ch space (htr, tr, htr, into 1-ch sp, ss in next 2sts) 7 times, htr, tr, htr into 1-ch sp, ss to join to first ss.
